Black Raspberries
Black raspberries are native to North America and are
becoming popular as an ingredient in speciality foods. They are small
berries, blue-black in colour with a white bloom on the exterior. They
have a hollow core like the red raspberry.
Rubus occidentalis
Research in the US has indicated that black raspberries
may offer some protection against cancer.

In one study, the effects of freeze dried black
raspberries in the diet was monitored in relation to cancerous
processes in the colon using rats. It was noted that aberrant crypt foci (tiny
lesions which may develop into tumours), adenocarcinomas and levels of
oxidative damage (8-OHdG) were significantly reduced in rats fed with the
berry diet. These berry diets included 2.5%, 5% and 10% freeze dried
black raspberries and the dose seemed to have some effect . These
results indicated that black raspberries inhibited several measures of
induced colon carcinogenesis and also modulated an important marker of
oxidative stress in the rat. Harris et al 2001
